Escaping the City at Wave Hill |A Peaceful Nature Getaway in the Bronx

By Cleo Vivas-Rojas

There are days when you simply need to escape the city, reconnect with nature, explore somewhere new, or just break away from your daily routine. Lately, I’ve been working a lot, and I felt I needed a change of scenery — somewhere peaceful, beautiful, and completely different from my usual surroundings.

Thanks to the Culture Pass program, I discovered Wave Hill, a hidden garden oasis in the Bronx overlooking the Hudson River. The moment I saw photos of the gardens and river views, I knew I had to visit.

So, I called a friend, and together we decided to take a little adventure outside our normal routine.

Taking the Bus to Wave Hill Bronx NYC

We decided to go by bus so we could enjoy the ride and experience a different side of the city along the way. New York traffic was definitely part of the adventure that day, but our expert bus driver somehow managed to avoid most of the bottlenecks and keep us moving.

We arrived near the Henry Hudson Parkway at the 252nd Street stop and followed the GPS directions from there. The route itself was easy to follow, but one thing we noticed immediately was the lack of proper sidewalks in some sections. We had to walk carefully along the side of the street, which didn’t feel entirely safe. Thankfully, traffic in the area was very light, making the walk manageable.

Still, once we reached the entrance to Wave Hill, everything changed instantly.

First Impressions of Wave Hill

The staff at Wave Hill were incredibly friendly and welcoming from the moment we arrived. They gave us maps, explained the different areas of the property, and shared details about the gardens and walking paths.

Map in hand, we started exploring.

The very first pathway immediately fascinated us. It was filled with flowers, greenery, and beautifully maintained gardens that felt peaceful and almost dreamlike. After spending weeks focused on work and responsibilities, this was exactly the type of atmosphere I needed.

Every corner felt calm, refreshing, and inspiring.

The Pergola and the Hudson River Views

Then we reached the pergola — and it absolutely did not disappoint.

The view overlooking the Hudson River was stunning. The perfectly manicured lawns, colorful flowers, and peaceful atmosphere created one of those moments where you just want to stop, breathe deeply, and stay there for a while.

I honestly didn’t want to leave.

Everything about that space felt relaxing and restorative. Sitting there, surrounded by nature and overlooking the river, felt like a reset button after a busy season of work.

Sometimes, you don’t realize how much you need a quiet moment until you finally allow yourself to have one.

On the lawn there were chairs perfectly placed to sit and relax and, by then, it was already noon, so we decided to have lunch. We had brought our own sandwiches, fruits, and snacks, and honestly, it turned out to be the perfect picnic spot.

Sitting under a tree on very comfortable chairs while looking over the Hudson River felt incredibly peaceful. We enjoyed our lunch slowly, appreciating the breeze, the views, and the silence around us. At that moment, I truly wanted to stay there for the entire day just relaxing and taking in every inch of the scenery.

But there was still so much more to explore.

A Stop at the Gift Shop

Before continuing our visit, we stopped by the gift shop to explore — and honestly, it was hard not to buy everything.

The shop was filled with delicate, artistic, and beautifully curated gifts inspired by nature and art. I behaved well and limited myself to just one magnet for my collection, but it definitely took some self-control.

My friend also bought a magnet along with a beautiful mirror case featuring The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, which was absolutely gorgeous.

Falling in Love with Wave Hill House

After the gift shop, we went to explore the café area and instantly fell in love with Wave Hill House.

The historic mansion is elegant without feeling overwhelming, blending beautifully into the surrounding gardens and river landscape. Originally built in the mid-19th century, the house reflects a combination of Italianate villa architecture with graceful country estate details that were popular during that period.

Large windows bring natural light into the interior while also framing stunning views of the Hudson River. The wraparound terraces, stone details, and soft-colored façade give the house a timeless charm that feels both sophisticated and welcoming.

Today, the house also serves as a venue for special events, gatherings, and celebrations, and honestly, it’s easy to understand why. The setting is absolutely beautiful.

Coffee at the Kate French Terrace

One of my favorite moments of the day was sitting at the Kate French Terrace beside Wave Hill House.

We ordered coffee and enjoyed some snacks we still had left from lunch while overlooking the gardens and the Hudson River. It felt like one of those rare peaceful moments where time slows down.

This is exactly the kind of place where you could easily spend hours reading a good book, journaling, or simply sitting quietly while enjoying the scenery.

The calm atmosphere, the fresh air, and the beautiful surroundings made it incredibly difficult to leave.

The Perkins Family Connection to The Met

One detail I found especially interesting about Wave Hill is its connection to some of New York City’s most important cultural institutions, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The estate was owned by the Perkins family for much of the early twentieth century. George W. Perkins was a prominent financier, conservationist, and philanthropist whose family helped shape Wave Hill into the remarkable property visitors enjoy today. In 1960, the Perkins and Freeman families donated the estate to New York City, ensuring that it would be preserved as a public garden and cultural center.

One notable resident was Bashford Dean, the founding curator of Arms and Armor at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. While living at Wave Hill, he expanded the house with a Gothic-style wing known as Armor Hall to display his collection. Much of that collection later became part of The Met’s world-famous Arms and Armor galleries.

The Arms and Armor Hall is actually one of my favorite places in the entire Metropolitan Museum of Art. Walking through those dramatic galleries filled with medieval armor, swords, shields, and horseback displays always feels like stepping into another world. Discovering that part of that story connects back to Wave Hill made the visit even more fascinating for me.

Exploring the Flower Garden and Glyndor Gallery

After our relaxing coffee break, we continued our visit through the Flower Garden and later explored the Glyndor Gallery.

The Flower Garden was vibrant, colorful, and beautifully maintained, filled with seasonal blooms and carefully designed arrangements that made every path feel picturesque. I had some fun observing the flowers some of them look like they have faces and facial expression.

The Glyndor Gallery added an artistic touch to the experience, blending contemporary exhibitions with the natural beauty surrounding the property.

One thing we somehow completely forgot to visit was the Wild Garden, the Aquatic Garden, and the Monocot Garden.

Honestly, I don’t know how we missed them.

But maybe that’s actually the perfect excuse to return.

I can already imagine how spectacular Wave Hill must look during the fall season with autumn colors covering the gardens and overlooking the Hudson River. I have a feeling it must be absolutely magical.

Final Thoughts

This visit reminded me how important it is to step away from routine once in a while. Sometimes all we really need is a quiet garden, fresh air, beautiful views, and a little adventure with a good friend.

My trip to Wave Hill turned out to be exactly what I needed: peaceful, beautiful, and inspiring.

I’m already looking forward to going back again.
